Departure This is a series about Native Americans, mostly from old photos. The technique is called transparent oil monochrome. It starts with a mineral spirits wash with Terra Rosa or Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber. The drawing is established by wiping out around the subject with a paper towel. Dark accents are added and light areas removed with a brush and mineral spirits. See what happened in the Marc Hanson workshop.

Sunday, August 24, 2008 American Art Collector Now on Stands Wow! This is a major art magazine doing an article on the OPA show and they have featured my painting ...bigger than any other in the article. Never saw that coming. A box of these was waiting by the studio door when we got home Friday.

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 American Art Collector Article!!!
This is from an email ad sent out by American Art Collector magazine today asking people to buy an ad in the Octorber issue. The Two pages are from the September issue showing the OPA article and...wow!...look whose painting gets over half a page! You've seen that one right here in this blog. To be in this article you had to get into the show and take out an ad. Before they announced who would be in the show Dalas Klein and I bought and ad which I will post below. It's the smallest size and we split the cost, but it was enough to qualify as luck would have it. I knew I'd be in the article, but didn't expect this kind of super treatment.
This is the ad I put together in Paint Shop Pro. Since we are OPA members we got the twelve month rate which is still a lot at $750. Won't be posting till about the 22nd because Loi and I are going to Marc Hanson's painting workshop in his home town of Taylor's Falls, MN.

Monday, August 4, 2008 House on the River
First we had a light sprinkle. Then the sun came out very brightly. Finally, the wind blew so hard we could no longer paint. I finished this at home. Below are the two thumbnail sketches just before starting to paint. As you first stand looking at a scene you may be thinking you know just what to do. But everything changes when you start making marks on a two dimensional surface. The actual scene is no help at all. The painting is another thing entirely from the reality. The task is to make a two dimensional design in paint that suggests something about the scene before you.
This was my first concept. Right away it was clear it wasn't ringing any bells. The area of water and area of distant trees were about equal. It seemed to have no excitement, very dull.
In the second one the house is smaller and there's more water. Better. In the painting I've added even more water area. These little sketches are useful. Sometimes I do them full size on the canvas with diluted paint. Just a few lines and you can imagine the finished painting with some practice.
